In December 2020, Servisa completed demolition of the Deutsche Post headquarters in Berlin. The technical and logistical aspects of this project made it a tough challenge, given the site was located right in the city centre.

The time frame for the demolition also put the organisational capacities of the contractor to a hard test. Servisa’s task, in fact, was to demolish the three-storey building while operating in a confined space where impact to the surrounding area had to be kept to a minimum.
The structure had been built with high-resistance concrete (with an unconfined compressive strength over 45 MPa) and rebars reaching diameters of 50 and 80 mm in the areas of the foundation and plinths.

The project was concluded successfully with the help of Indeco attachments, which made the difference in terms of productivity and scheduling. Added to an HP 5000 hydraulic hammer, the most productive in its category on the market today, a pair of multifunctional IMP 25 Combi Cutter jaws proved effective and adaptable to the different operating situations. Thanks to the interchangeability of the tools, the attachment can be transformed into a breaker, crusher or shears according to need.

The IRP 18 X pulverizer was used to carry out the primary crushing of over 3,000 m3 of demolition waste. This attachment performed very efficiently also thanks to its geometric design, which achieves the minimum variation in pulverising force between the start (maximum opening) and finish (minimum opening). This feature increases constancy and efficacy in the crushing action and thereby reduces working times and stresses transmitted to the excavator. The IRP 18 X also delivered great productivity due to its hydraulic system with a “regeneration valve”, which enables the movable jaw to be closed more quickly under no-load conditions, allowing all available force to be applied only when the material is being crushed.

A valuable asset to the project was the IMG 2800 D multigrab jaws, whose manoeuvrability and mounting bracket compatible with other Indeco products guaranteed the highest precision when handling the different materials.

Indeco is the ideal partner for Servisa
Servisa Group is the largest demolition and environmental services contractor in the Berlin-Brandenburg area. Despite its size, it has remained a family-owned company since its founding in 1971, and is one of Germany’s major contractors in this sector. We met with CEO Sascha Hellwig on a site in Berlin’s city centre where Servisa was demolishing an eight-storey building.

How did Servisa get its start?
“We started out as demolition contractors, but our activities now extend to earthmoving and transporting waste material to disposal facilities. We also hold a license authorising us to perform all recycling activities, also for others. And over the last couple of years, we’ve entered the logistics sector, providing construction companies all services related to job site preparation.”

How do you see the developments in your sector?
"I think there’s the real possibility that demolition contractors can become subcontractors of recycling companies. This is because the problem of transporting waste to disposal sites has more and more strategic importance, and it’s the reason why we’ve decided to consolidate in both directions. Here in Berlin, for example, one thing is to send a truckload of waste material to the disposal site, and quite another to haul away 800,000 tonnes, as we did last year. In the future, it won’t just be trucks, but maybe even trains, barges and ships. In this business you have to be very creative, also when it comes to interpreting laws and regulations regarding waste and its handling. Often we’re dealing with structures from the 1970s or 80s that contain special waste, such as asbestos. For all these reasons, just having an excavator with a big hammer is no longer enough to call yourself a demolition contractor; the concept is much broader now. The important thing is to have a vision for the future so that you can keep pace with the times. I think sometimes this aspect isn’t taken into proper consideration by other companies in the sector.”

What does your fleet of equipment consist of and how did you become an Indeco customer?
“Presently, we have 23 excavators, 20 trucks, and 100 machines, including attachments. When we decided to purchase new demolition equipment, we looked around to see what the market offered and by exclusion decided to try out Indeco, which had us very convinced. Another factor was that the Indeco and Servisa technicians already knew each other; that’s not a minor consideration, as it’s very important that our people have a good relationship with our equipment suppliers. And besides the intrinsic quality and productivity of the attachments, we really liked Indeco’s whole approach -- the multi-tool concept – because, I emphasise, there is an increasing demand to separate the waste material on site. And that’s a good thing, because the more the material is separated before going to the disposal facility, the more streamlined the later steps will be. I have to say that our experience with Indeco to now has been very positive from every standpoint.”

How many job sites have you got active given the building boom in Berlin?
"We’ve got a lot of sites active. They are all large-scale structures, residential and office buildings, and also malls. For the most part they are situated in the city centre, in Alexander Platz for instance, where over the next few years six skyscrapers will be going up. Right in that part of the city, our job will entail demolition and job site preparation for later construction, which also includes removing the foundations and taking care of logistical aspects. Another important area under development is at the East Side Gallery, near the old Berlin Wall, a tourist area where we have two sites active. It’s due to this enormous demand in Berlin that our efforts are concentrated in the city, but in the past we’ve worked throughout Germany, from the Bavarian Alps to all the major cities.”

How many people does Servisa employ?
“We have about 150, but before Covid, we had intended to increase that number to 200. Fortunately, we have an excellent network in the Berlin area, and have been able recruit labour, especially from Eastern Germany and Southeastern Europe. They are willing to work hard and also to take on the physical challenges of a demolition site. It’s tougher to find staff to manage the work phases, because there’s a lot of competition among the companies for hiring qualified technical personnel.”

How do you train your personnel?
"Over and above the technical aspects, we want them to become part of Servisa Group in every way. We also need staff that can handle a variety of aspects and are willing to develop their professional skills. We like working with young people because they’re so motivated. And it’s important that, aside from fulfilling their assigned goals, they have a certain degree of freedom, and that they actively contribute to the job within a less rigid, more efficient organisation where they give the best of the themselves individually and enhance the work of everyone else. This is a heavy line of work, so enthusiasm must be kept high so that productivity improves and a bond is created with the company.”

Do you see a continuing partnership with Indeco based on your developing activities?
"If we want to grow in the sense I mentioned, we have to rely on one or two partners for machines and equipment who will flank us both as regards product and assistance. The business is changing, and we see that Indeco is orienting itself in that direction. I’m convinced that a partnership between Servisa and Indeco is a win for everybody.”

The Princes Freeway is the 160-kilometre Australian motorway that connects Melbourne to Geelong on the west and Traralgon on the east.

The Princes Highway-Geelong Road is one of the main routes that connect Melbourne's western and eastern suburbs and is used daily by commuters, families, public and freight vehicles.

The Duncan Road junction is a key route to and from many suburbs: the bridge, built 61 years ago, has a daily circulation of approximately 11,000 vehicles.

To improve traffic flow and road safety, the State of Victoria carried out an upgrade work on the Duncan Road junction, which included:

● the construction of new exit ramps
● the demolition of the old bridge and the construction of the new one with two lanes in both directions
● the addition of two new ramps for traffic to and from Geelong
● the construction of cycle and pedestrian paths and safe crossings on Duncan Road

To minimize traffic disruption, the old bridge had to be demolished in just one weekend. The flyover was in fact closed to traffic on Saturday 20th June, in the evening, and reopened on Monday morning.

The works were carried out in record time by City Circle Demolition, one of the most important Australian demolition companies, a client of Indeco since 2016.

One HP 5000 and two HP 7000 hammers by Indeco played an important role in the demolition of the Duncan Road bridge and of the safety barriers of the pillars, which were built using high MPA concrete with extra steel reinforcements to withstand the impact of a truck of about 70 tons traveling at 100 km / h.

Indeco hammers have once again proven to be a reliable partner wherever there is demolition work to be carried out.

Servisa, a major demolition company in the Berlin/Brandenburg region, recently purchased a number of Indeco attachments and immediately put them to work on several of their job sites. They include an IRP 18 X pulverizer, which performed the demolition of an eight-storey building on Meierottostrasse in Berlin. Since this was a residential neighborhood, using a hydraulic hammer was not considered due to the inevitable noise and vibration, which would have caused a disturbance to nearby residents.
Thanks to its power in proportion to size (max jaw opening of 820 mm, maximum force at tip of 65 tons, maximum force at cutters of 210 tons with the ability to cut reinforcements up to 40 mm), the IRP 18 X pulverizer proved up to the task and successfully completed the project.

The Lange e.K. quarry and sawmill in Sprockhövel, Germany, features a rather compact Ruhr sandstone, even harder than most granites. Thomas Lange explains their decision to purchase an HP 2500 HD/ABF: “When faced with the need to improve production, we decided to switch to the HP 2500 FS and mount it on a JCB 220 XLC excavator. Our choice was guided by the fact that the HP 2500 was able to increase our production by 30%, as it then demonstrated in the quarry. “It’s already quite clear to us that the promises Indeco Deutschland made to us have been more than fulfilled - declares Thomas Lange. “The excellent results we achieved soon convinced us of the Indeco hammer’s superior technology”. As so many users around the globe have been saying”, continued Indeco Deutschland, “Indeco breakers have an excellent ratio between energy input and energy output and consequently optimum efficiency”.

All Indeco hammers are installed with the ABF (Anti-Blank Firing) system, Indeco’s patented technology that considerably improves the performance and durability of the breakers. In addition to a hydraulic system with improved efficiency, the HP series displays the FS (Fuel Saving) mark, indicating that the hammer needs less hydraulic power to operate, resulting in a significant reduction in the carrier machine’s rpm and a fuel savings of up to 20%. While delivering consistently excellent performance and maximum productivity, Indeco hammers require less oil per minute and lower operating pressures than hammers made by other manufacturers in terms of weight and performance. This huge competitive advantage is even more clear-cut if we compare the Indeco hammer with gas- or gas/oil-powered hammers of similar sizes manufactured by our competitors. Indeco, an Italian manufacturer of hydraulic equipment, was founded in 1976, making this its 45th year in business. Right from the outset, here at Indeco we set our sights on predicting (and bringing in innovations for) the needs of the marketplace, while counting on the experience and efficiency of our distribution network and on the skills of our after-sales service providers.

Ever since its foundation in 2012, Iberobras Construção Civil e Empreitadas Ltda, based in Natal (RN) with subsidiaries in Brazil’s northeastern states and Rio Grande do Sul in the south, has been working in the housing and wind energy sectors.
Today the company has built up a wealth of experience, with more than 1800 wind turbines in action, in various northeastern states such as Piauí, Ceará, Paraiba, Pernambuco, Bahia, Rio Grande do Norte as well as the Rio Grande do Sul, the states with the highest density of windfarms.
Iberobras was commissioned by the governments of Rio Grande do Sul, Rio Grande do Norte and Pernambuco to carry out the excavations needed to build the corridor of wind turbines, as well as a series of civil constructions for controlling the release of the energy. The works are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2020.
For the excavations in the igneous rock they used two Indeco hammers: an HP 3000 FS fitted to a John Deere JD 250G carrier and an HP 5000 FS mounted on a John Deere JD 350G.
“We were already familiar with Indeco products – the whole hydraulic hammer range, as well as the pulverizers and shears”, says Ricardo, jobsite manager at Iberobras Construção Civil e Empreitadas. “We went for Indeco products in part because of the efficiency and productivity of the equipment, but also because there are two dealerships close to the jobsites, and because of Indeco Brazil’s after-sales services”.

Both jobs were carried out by City Circle Demolition & Excavation, one of Australia’s largest demolition firms, and an Indeco Australia customer since 2016, which has a number of Indeco products in its fleet, such as shears, multiprocessors, multigrabs, pulverizers and hammers from the HP 150 to the HP 7000.

Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club

Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club is internationally renowned as the spiritual home of Australian tennis, having hosted the very first Australian championships all the way back in 1927. And this was where the Australian Open was held from 1972 onwards, until the inauguration of Melbourne Park in 1988.
The refurbishment aimed to improve the facilities for members, such as extending the club house and building a new multi-story car park. The job carried out by City Circle lasted around two months, and involved various hammers and an IRP 29 X for the demolition side, while an IMG 2300 and an IMG 2800 were employed for material handling and sorting.

Rod Laver Arena

Inaugurated in 1988, Melbourne Park is regarded as one of the temples of world sport. Originally known as Flinders Park, in 2000 the center court of Melbourne Park was renamed the Rod Laver Arena, to honor the outstanding career of one of tennis’s greatest champions, Rod Laver.
The modernization of the Rod Laver Arena is one stage in the Melbourne Park redevelopment project, for which the federal government has set aside 972 million Australian dollars. The redevelopment will breathe new life into Rod Laver Arena, delivering improved amenities for visitors, players and artists alike. The demolition and renovation works on five different floors will take a total of 5 years so as to enable various sports events, the Australian Open, concerts and other entertainment events to take place throughout.
For such an ambitious project, City Circle required reliable, productive equipment such as Indeco hammers of various sizes, ISS shears, IMG MultiGrabs and the IMP 45 for demolishing some concrete suspension bridges.

Indeco breakers have long been the choice of quarry operators around the world who have changed their method of extraction from drilling and blasting to mechanical systems. With the exclusion of very large quarries located in remote areas, the use of breakers is now a solid trend in many countries due to several factors that make drilling and blasting a less advantageous solution. Undoubtedly, among the motivations is the ever complicated bureaucracy involved in obtaining permits to use explosives in view of the safety issues. Another aspect is environmental impact, which over the last 20 years has played an important role in many quarry operators’ decision to switch their excavation method, as the noise and vibration from quarrying activities can be a disturbance to residential areas in the vicinity. Favoring a hydraulic breaker are also technical and economic considerations: though drilling and blasting clearly delivers superior output and is a necessary method on sites where high daily production volumes are required, it involves steps that lengthen times and add to costs. The most evident are the need to use rock drills (in general expensive equipment) and to reduce the volume of the larger blocks with the breaker before sending the material to the crusher. When sufficiently productive, reliable and able to sustain the constant work pace typical of a quarry, breakers are a valid quarrying method.
Messapica Inerti operates the limestone quarry in Ceglie Messapica in Italy’s Puglia region, supplying quality aggregates to produce concrete and asphalt (at its own and subcontracted production plants) and is one of the many companies that have switched to breakers after being convinced of the advantages. Starting in the late 1990s, Messapica Inerti decided to gradually abandon the use of explosives and transition to quarrying with breakers, carefully weighing which model would guarantee the highest productivity, reliability and profitability. After a set of comparative tests, the company settled on an Indeco HP 7000, a model that over the long term has proven its ability to meet the production demands of the quarry. Given the excellent output of the attachment during the early 2000s, the company followed up by purchasing a second breaker

 The HP 9000 increases production

The quarry is characterized by relatively compact limestone (i.e., not highly fractured) and values of uniaxial compressive strength of 30-50 MPa depending on the zone. Angelo Elia, purchasing manager at Messapica Inerti, spoke about the choice for an HP 9000 to boost production: “When faced with the need to improve production, we decided to switch to the HP 9000 FS and mount it on an Case CX 490D excavator, guided by the fact that the HP 9000 was able to increase our production by 30%, as was demonstrated in the quarry. This new breaker will be added to the two HP 7000 we already own that in any case will be key to achieving our total daily production goals. Based on our use of Indeco breakers over the last 20 years or so, I can say that the HP 9000 FS possesses all the features that have led to the excellent results we’ve had to now, not to mention the advantages of the latest technology.”
That opinion is shared by many users around the globe who recognize Indeco breakers for their excellent ratio between energy input and energy output and consequently optimum efficiency. All breakers of the range are installed with the ABF (Anti-Blank Firing) system, Indeco’s patented technology that considerably improves the performance and durability of the breakers. In addition to a hydraulic system with improved efficiency, the HP series is characterized by the FS (Fuel Saving) mark indicating that the breaker needs less hydraulic power to operate, resulting in a significant reduction in the carrier machine’s rpm and a fuel savings of up to 20%. While delivering consistently excellent performance and maximum productivity, Indeco breakers require a reduced quantity of oil per minute and a lower operating pressure, a notable advantage with respect to breakers of other manufacturers in terms of weight and performance, and an even more important factor when comparing Indeco breakers with competing products of the same size that are gas or diesel-powered.

Stogit, a subsidiary of Snam, is performing a renovation project at the gas storage facility in Minerbio outside Bologna. The company, leader in gas storage in Italy and one of the most important companies in Europe, manages nine facilities and operates in synergy with other transport and regasification infrastructures, contributing decisively to the country’s energy safety. The storage system is critically important because it equalizes the supply and consumption of gas, and to that end, Stogit places special attention on the safety and efficiency of its facilities.

The project at the Minerbio facility involves three phases, but the first part currently under way provides that the pertinent areas be restored to “greenfield” status in order to prepare them for subsequent works and to increase the space available inside the facility. The works entail the total demolition and removal of the plants, above-ground structures, piping (underground and on the surface) and the reinforced concrete bases of the two turbo compressors that had reached the end of their working life so that they could be replaced with a larger, more powerful one with an upgraded design and that delivered greater efficiency.

A rational choice of equipment

Stogit assigned the dismantling of the two turbo compressors to Sicilsaldo/Nuova Ghizzoni, specialized contractor in the oil industry and active in the construction of gas pipelines and plants, industrial assembles, and in the civil and international market, having completed important projects in Tunisia, Kuwait and Algeria. Sicilsaldo/Nuova Ghizzoni is currently part of the consortium of companies undertaking construction of the TAP (Trans Adriatic Pipeline), the pipeline that will cross the Adriatic and bring natural gas from the Caspian Sea to Italy after traversing Turkey, Greece and Albania. Other major projects are being performed in Mexico and Algeria. The company, which is one of the most important Italian firms in the industry and is known for its experience, highly skilled staff and efficient logistics, also claims a fleet of machines and equipment numbering hundreds.

Despite the availability of machinery, for this specific project at the Minerbio storage facility, Sicilsaldo/Nuova Ghizzoni decided to purchase Indeco ISS 10/20 shears. Luca Di Vita, who represents the company at Stogit and is also the Construction Site Manager, says the size of the equipment and its power were a determining factor: “As always, and that goes for this project too, we measured the use of resources and evaluated all aspects of the contract, so that we were able to comply with the specifications and the timeframe of the tender.

Because the gas storage facility is in operation, we had to be very careful when choosing the method of using the machinery and equipment and the areas where they would be operation, taking the strict safety criteria into particular consideration. The choice of moderately small shears was prompted by the need to operate within the assigned areas, all relatively small. Larger shears would have implied using an excavator with a higher weight, which would have compromised mobility during the phases to dismantle the turbo compressors and, in the long run, also productivity.

The high concentration of service roads and footpaths within the site would have also limited the space available for the phase where the various structural elements and components of the plant would be further cut to allow them to be hauled away for recycling. Though the ISS 10/20 was in some way undersized with respect to the larger structural elements, it demonstrated great productivity and an exceptional cutting ability, but also allowed us to greatly limit manual work, an advantage that significantly influenced the speed and especially the safety of all phases of the demolition.”

Small Indeco shears

The ISS 10/20 purchased by Sicilsaldo/Nuova Ghizzoni (one of the smallest in the Indeco range), with a working weight of just 2400 Kg and maximum clamping force at tip of no less than 120 tons, has an outstanding power-to-weight ratio. Like the other models in the range, these shears also feature a robust structure made entirely out of HARDOX® steel and is equipped with a dual guide that keeps the jaws perfectly aligned and prevents buckling throughout the cutting stroke. The regeneration valve also speeds up the movement of the jaw (accelerating opening and closing, thus improving productivity), while the exclusive dual-piercing system on both the upper and lower blades improves cutting performance, for a clean, gradual cut.

The contract for the partial demolition of a disused area at a former Cartiere Paolo Pigna paper mill, in the small Northern Italian town of Alzano Lombardo, was won by local Bergamo firm Leonardo SpA and carried out by the Bergamelli firm from nearby Nembro, a firm founded in 1965, specializing in excavations, demolition, highway and civil works, as well as industrial construction.Indeco customers since 2015, Bergamelli chose to use a range of Indeco products on this job: two HP 700 hammers, one HP 500 and one HP 150, an IMP 20 multiprocessor in crusher configuration for the primary demolition of heavy concrete and one IRP 23 X mounted on a Volvo EC 290 to demolish the floors, slabs and surrounding walls. The 90-day demolition job saw Indeco products work 8 hours a day with daily production of 200 m3. “We were already using Indeco hammers. Adding the pulverizer and multiprocessor to our fleet provided further confirmation of the quality and reliability of Indeco products and of their after-sales and technical support” says company owner Martino Bergamelli. “Using Indeco equipment actually meant we were able to complete the job well before the deadline”.
Once again, Indeco products prove efficient and reliable on site. And not just on paper.

Fabrizio Pasini, based in Valgoglio, near Bergamo, in Northern Italy chose an Indeco IHC R 150 compactor for building reinforced and unreinforced earth embankments and for backfilling trenches. Mounted on Euromach and Kaiser spider excavators, the rotating compactor did him proud, completing the job in just five days. “I chose Indeco for its quality products and the efficiency of its after-sales service and technical support. The Indeco IHC R 150’s rapid compaction capacity made it an effective and indispensable tool on the jobsite. After only 3 months, I also bought an HP 1200 hammer, which I’m sure will live up to my expectations“.

In December 2018, Indeco dealers in Austria, Doralco GesmbH, based in Oeynhausen just outside Vienna, fulfilled an order for an Indeco ISS 20/30 shear.
The shear is currently being used on various jobsites belonging to ÖMV, a firm which over the last 50 years has managed a number of different gas pipelines throughout Austria.
Mounted on a Kobelco excavator with a working weight of approximately 31 tons, the ISS 20/30 shear, with a working weight of about 3600 kg, is being used for demolitions by the main contractor Habau, part of an Austrian group that has been operating for over 100 years in sectors such as building, civil engineering, construction of gas pipelines, prefabricated buildings and tunnelling. Before this job, the shear had already made a name for itself in the company, without showing any signs of wear, when it had been used to demolish approximately 22 kilometres of pipeline with an external diameter of 300 mm and a thickness of 12 mm. Due in great part to the efforts of Doralco, Indeco products have been highly successful on the Austrian market, with a number of hydraulic hammers and pulverizers being sold last year.

The Metro Tunnel - also known as the Melbourne Metro Rail Project - is a metropolitan rail infrastructure project that will make a significant difference to mobility in the city of Melbourne, Australia. The project involves the construction of twin 9-kilometre rail tunnels between South Kensington station (north west of the Melbourne City Centre) and South Yarra (in the south east) with five new underground stations. Work began in 2016, and then in 2017 sections of Melbourne's Central Business District (or CBD) were closed for demolition work, to make way for the construction of the tunnel and new stations. This area includes City Square, where the CBD South station known as Town Hall Station will be built, and where Indeco products were used to demolish buildings and underground parking to make room for the new station. The demolition was entrusted to City Circle Demolition and Excavation, a Melbournebased company founded in 1981, specializing in excavations, demolition and recycling. Critical issues include the lack of space available and the noise limitations imposed in the Central Business District during working hours. The company therefore started off using small hammers and excavators to create the entrance and thereafter used larger excavators equipped according to the job at hand, either with an Indeco multi-processor or with a hammer, working for about 8 months on 8-hour work shifts. City Circle became an Indeco customer in 2016 and since then has purchased several products from Indeco Australia, which has been supplying the local market since 1993. Their fleet is currently made up of eight breakers, three of which are small (HP 150, HP 500, HP 700), three medium (HP 1200, HP 1500, HP 2500) and two large (HP 3500 and HP 7000), plus three multiprocessors (one IMP 15 in shear configuration, one IMP 35 and one IMP 45) and an IRP 29 X rotating pulverizer. “We are familiar with several Indeco products, their hammers, pulverizers, multiprocessors and shears” say Peter and Tim Skidmore, respectively director and manager of City Circle Demolition and Excavation “Indeco products are always good performers and guarantee excellent production. What’s more, their commercial and technical support are second to none, which is crucial when we have tight deadlines to meet”.

Do you want to know the best method for excavating a tunnel?

Tunneling works are inherently complex and there are plenty of variables to consider. The answer lies in the hydraulic breaker’s versatility. There are many situations where a TBM (or Tunnel Boring Machine), one of the most widespread and best-known methods, cannot be used for a variety of reasons (such as size and location of the tunnel, curve radius, logistical challenges, lack of flexibility of use) that would involve excessive costs or risks.
